母校“alma mater”原来与慈母有关！

美国耶鲁是常春藤联合会名牌大学之一，相信大家都晓得。同时，它也是美国总统的摇篮，自1988年起，三位美国总统——老布什、克林顿与小布什——都是耶鲁的毕业生。近日，耶鲁宣布，将在互联网上免费提供一些课程的数字视频，以便让更多人享受这所精英大学所提供的服务。

报道中的alma mater就是我们常说的“母校”。Alma mater是个拉丁词，原指“kind mother”（慈母），现常用来形容“母校”或“高校的校歌”。如例句：We must try to reflect credit on our Alma Mater.（我们必须设法为母校争光。）

另外，拉丁词alumni指的是“男校友”，alumna则是“女校友”。
