词后面作后置定语。
　　We both like football, he is a man after my own heart.
　　
　　我们两人都喜欢足球，是情投意合的好朋友。
　　
　　Susan worked with Smith in eht same office. She admired him sa the man ater her own heart.
　　
　　苏珊过去同史密斯在同一室工作。她把史密斯看作知己。
　　
　　Tom is working as a postman. That outdoor job is the one after his own heart.
　　
　　汤姆的工作是邮递员。这份户外工作正中他的下怀。
　　
　　在以上三个例句中，这一表示的意义相同。但该还可表示下面的含义：
　　
　　I am reading a bool after my own heart. I can‘t put it down.
　　
　　我正在读一本我喜欢的书。我简直放不下这本书啦。

　　He was quarrelsome and ready to fight at the drop of a hat.
　　
　　读过上面这句话之后，你如果理解为“他这人爰好吵架，帽子掉到地上就会同人争吵。”那可就同句子的实际意义相去甚远，甚至可说是南辕北辙了。
　　
　　中世纪，在欧洲社会中，流行着决斗的风气。一些骑士或武士们为了自己的心上人，往往采取决斗的方式。如俄国的大人普希金就死于决斗之中。这些人们在决斗之前，往往把帽子狠狠地往地下一摔，这就意味着决斗马上就开始了。这一习俗不仅在决斗中，在其它场合也意味着坏事立即就要发生了。
　　
　　时过境迁，决斗这一现象已成为的过去。然而at the drop of a hat这一却流传下来，而且保留了“立即，马上”这一意义。其英语的意义是：without waiting, immediately。
　　
　　If you need a babysitter quickly, call Mary, ause she can come at the drop of a hat.
　　
　　如果你急需保姆，给玛莉打吧，因为她召之即来。
　　
　　Don‘t mention baskerball to Tom. He would go and play at the drop of a hat.
