Out of Pocket不只是“掏腰包”

　　美国话里有一句话：“There's more than just meets the eye”，意思是除了表层意义以外，还有更深一层意思。这句话用在out of pocket上，可以说是恰如其分。

　　out of pocket，一看这个说法，人们很容易想到，这是掏腰包的意思。对，这是表面意思，比如说，“The out-of-pocket expense for this tripis$500,and the rest is covered by the company.”(这次旅行，个人只需掏500美元，其他的都由公司包了)。注意这里“out-of-pocket”用了连字符“-”，表示一个整体概念：“掏腰包”。

　　但在美语中，常听到这样的说法：“I’mout of pocket these days.”在这句话里，说“out of pocket”是“掏腰包”就讲不通了。这句话的真正意思是“I’m unavailable these days”或“I’m absent these days”———“这一段我不在”。

　　据说，这个说法源于另一个说法“They are living in one another's pocket”（“他们终日厮混在一起”）。既然“pocket”能形象地描绘了“像挤在一个口袋里一样”的亲密，那么“out of pocket”便也可以说是“不在”或“失踪”了。
